41st Global Congress on MIGS Call for Abstracts
AAGL will begin accepting abstracts for the 41st Global Congress on MIGS March 1, 2012. Abstracts are due by April 15, 2012 (a $35 fee will be assesed if an abstract is submitted between April 15-30, 2012)

Route of Hysterectomy for Benign Disease
In an evidence-based position statement published online in The Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology, the AAGL, a medical specialty society of over 5,000 gynecologic surgeons, advocates the practice of perfoming hysterectomies for benign disease vaginally or laparoscopically in a minimally invasive manner, thus reducing morbidity and facilitating faster recovery. New Study Questions Benefits of Elective Removal of Ovaries During Hysterectomy
Removal of the ovaries (bilateral oophorectomy) while performing a hysterectomy is common practice to prevent the subsequent development of ovarian cancer. This prophylactic procedure is performed in 55% of all U.S. women having a hysterectomy, or approximately 300,000 times each year. An article in March/April issue of The Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology suggests that this procedure may do more harm than good. Read more...
